๐ฟ๏ธ Meet the Micro Squirrel!
Tiny, energetic and incredibly cute โ the Micro Squirrel, commonly known as the African Pygmy Dormouse, is one of the fascinating small mammals you can discover at Wingsland Exotic Park, Nellipoyil.
๐ Origin
African pygmy dormice are native to parts of sub-Saharan Africa, where they live mainly in trees and woodland habitats. They are excellent climbers and spend much of their time exploring branches and vegetation.
๐ฟ๏ธ Varieties
The name โMicro Squirrelโ is often used for small African pygmy dormice in captivity. It should not be confused with the true dwarf-squirrel species of Central and South America. Different colour variations or captive morphs may be seen in the pet trade, depending on the breeder.
๐ What Do They Eat?
They are omnivorous. Their natural diet includes:
- ๐ Small amounts of fruit
- ๐พ Seeds and grains
- ๐ Small insects
- ๐ฟ Plant material
- ๐ Fungal material
A balanced captive diet should be provided rather than relying only on fruit or seeds. Fresh drinking water should always be available.
๐ Cage Setup
Because they are active climbers, a tall, secure and well-ventilated enclosure is important.
Include:
- ๐ฟ Branches and climbing structures
- ๐ชต Safe hiding places and nesting areas
- ๐ A suitable exercise wheel
- ๐ฅฃ Food and water containers
- ๐งน Clean, low-dust bedding
- ๐ Escape-proof doors and fine mesh
A vertical enclosure gives them more opportunities to climb and explore.
โค๏ธ Breeding
Breeding information for African pygmy dormice in captivity is relatively limited. In breeding programs, a healthy compatible male and female are provided with a quiet nesting environment. The female cares for the young after birth.
Because breeding requirements can vary, breeding should be supervised by an experienced keeper or exotic-animal veterinarian.
๐ฉบ Common Health Concerns
Watch for:
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Diarrhea
- Breathing difficulties
- Injuries or wounds
- Dental problems
- Parasites
- Stress caused by poor housing or unsuitable temperatures
Sudden changes in behaviour, eating or activity should be taken seriously and checked by an exotic-animal veterinarian.
