The Lori Keet (Lorikeet) is one of the most colorful and lively parrots you can see at Wingsland Exotic Park, Nellipoyil. If the birds at Wingsland are Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus), they are native to Australia and are specially adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen. Their brush-like tongues help them collect nectar from flowers.

🦜 Name & Origin

Common Name: Rainbow Lorikeet / Lori Keet
Scientific Name: Trichoglossus moluccanus
Origin: Australia, particularly forest, woodland and urban areas along the eastern and southeastern regions.

🍎 Food

Unlike many parrots, lorikeets mainly eat nectar and pollen. In managed care, they can be offered a specially formulated lorikeet nectar diet along with suitable fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh food and clean water are important, and nectar mixtures should be prepared fresh because they can spoil quickly.

🌿 Daily Care & Routine

Lorikeets are active, social birds that need plenty of movement and stimulation. Daily care includes:

  • Fresh nectar/appropriate food and clean drinking water
  • Clean feeding bowls and enclosure
  • Safe perches and opportunities to climb and fly
  • Regular bathing and grooming opportunities
  • Observation for changes in appetite, droppings, feathers or behavior

Because nectar can support bacterial and fungal growth, feeding utensils and food areas need careful hygiene.

🩺 Common Health Issues

Some health concerns in lorikeets include yeast or gastrointestinal infections, psittacine beak and feather disease, chlamydia, feather picking, beak problems and nutritional disorders. Excess dietary iron can also cause serious iron-storage disease, so their diet should be specifically formulated for lorikeets.

🪺 Breeding

Lorikeets generally breed as pairs and use tree hollows or suitable nest boxes. A typical clutch is around two eggs, with incubation commonly lasting roughly 22–26 days across lory and lorikeet species. Proper nesting space, compatible breeding pairs, nutrition and veterinary supervision are important for successful captive breeding.
