The African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is one of the most fascinating parrots in the world, famous for its intelligence, excellent ability to mimic sounds, and beautiful silver-grey feathers with a striking red tail. You can see this remarkable bird at Wingsland Exotic Park, Nellipoyil, along with other exotic birds.

🌍 Name & Origin

Common name: African Grey Parrot / Congo Grey Parrot
Scientific name: Psittacus erithacus
Origin: The tropical forests of West and Central Africa, including areas around the Congo Basin.

🥕 Food

In the wild, African Greys eat fruits, seeds, nuts and other plant foods. In managed care, a balanced diet can include quality formulated pellets, fresh vegetables, suitable fruits, and limited nuts/seeds. A seed-only diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies, particularly calcium and vitamin A deficiencies.

☀️ Daily Routine & Care

African Greys need a clean, spacious and well-ventilated environment. Their daily routine should include:

  • Fresh, clean drinking water
  • Balanced meals and fresh food
  • Safe perches and climbing space
  • Toys and foraging activities for mental stimulation
  • Regular bathing opportunities
  • Quiet and sufficient nighttime sleep
  • Daily observation of appetite, droppings, feathers and behaviour

Mental stimulation is especially important because these highly intelligent birds can develop behavioural problems when bored or understimulated.

🩺 Common Health Issues

Some health concerns seen in African Grey Parrots include calcium deficiency, vitamin A deficiency, obesity, respiratory infections such as aspergillosis, psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), and feather-destructive behaviour. Regular veterinary check-ups, good nutrition, hygiene and proper housing help support their wellbeing.

🪺 Breeding

African Greys are generally monogamous and naturally nest in tree cavities. In managed breeding, a compatible mature pair is provided with a secure nest box, privacy, appropriate nutrition and suitable environmental conditions. A typical clutch may contain 2–4 eggs, with incubation lasting around 28 days. Breeding should be undertaken only with appropriate expertise and veterinary support.
