🐦 Name & Origin

Common Name: Cockatiel
Scientific Name: Nymphicus hollandicus
Origin: Australia

Cockatiels are native to mainland Australia, where they commonly live in open woodlands, grasslands and areas near water. They feed mainly on grass and other plant seeds.

🌾 Food

A balanced Cockatiel diet can include quality seeds or pellets, fresh leafy greens, vegetables, sprouts and suitable fruits, with clean drinking water available every day. Their natural diet is largely seed-based.

☀️ Daily Care Routine

Good daily care includes:

• Fresh drinking water every day
• Clean food dishes and regular cage cleaning
• A balanced and varied diet
• Safe opportunities for flying, movement and play
• Perches and bird-safe materials for chewing
• Regular social interaction
• A quiet, comfortable period for nighttime rest

Cleanliness is particularly important because poor hygiene and overcrowding can contribute to illness.

❤️ Common Health Issues

Cockatiels can experience nutritional deficiencies, respiratory problems, parasites, infections, obesity and reproductive problems such as egg binding. Changes in appetite, droppings, breathing, activity or appearance should be taken seriously and assessed by an avian veterinarian.

🪺 Breeding

Cockatiels are cavity-nesting birds. In the wild, they commonly use hollows in trees; in captivity, a suitable nest box can provide a similar environment. The female lays a small clutch of eggs, and both parents participate in incubation and feeding the chicks.

At Wingsland Exotic Park, Nellipoyil, visitors can observe these beautiful birds and learn more about their natural behaviour, feeding and care.
